 NORMAN — Booker D. Shackelford was born as B. D. Shackelford, Jr. on October 17, 1947 in Richmond, CA to B. D. Shackelford, Sr. & the former Artie Mae Hopkins, as their eldest child.After his father’s and younger brother’s deaths, Booker and his mother moved to Waggoner, OK until his mother’s re-marriage to Emmitt Johnson, then settled in Muskogee, OK where two more sons were born, John Henry and Joe Willis Johnson.At the age of 8, Booker was born again and grew up attending Mount Zion Baptist singing in the choir, attending Sunday School and BTU.Booker attended Douglass Elementary, Sadler Jr. High and graduated from Manual Training High School in 1965 where he was a member of the marching band and football team. He then attended Northeastern State College (now Northeastern State University) on a football scholarship, graduating in 1969 with a B.S. in Education and a minor in History. He was active in track & field and was a charter member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He then attended the University of Oklahoma, pursuing a second B.S. in Physical Therapy where he was a charter member of OU’s first African-American Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Zeta Zeta chapter.He met and married the former Sherryl McDonald on September 19, 1970 in Oklahoma City and they made their home in Norman, OK where their family grew with four children: B. D. III, William Isaac, Marjorie and Michelle.Booker and his family were founding members of Norman’s first African-American church, Community Missionary Baptist, where he served as deacon, trustee, treasurer, clerk, Sunday School Supt., choir member, BTU, men’s fellowship, and Children’s Church from 1979-1991. He then served on the Usher Board at Riverside Church from 1991-1999. From 1999 until his passing, he served as Associate Pastor at Tabernacle of David Int’l Worship Center where he served in the choir, LifeSkills teacher, church clerk, Men’s Fellowship, and Security.Booker began his career in Law Enforcement as the first African-American Police Officer with the Norman Police Dept. in 1972 where he became a Master Patrolman and member of the SWAT team for 6 years. He then worked at General Motors in Security and other departments for 23 years. After GM’s plant closed, he became a deputy for Cleveland County Sheriff Office for 8 years providing security for Alternative Education. Upon retirement, he joined the Norman Public School Campus Police, continuing to work with Dimensions Academy and his beloved young people, whom he referred to as his “precious darlings.”Booker will be greatly missed dispensing his holy hugs, big smile, deep belly laughter, exhortations and corny jokes. He loved his family, church, friends, co-workers, roses, orchids, music, sports and life. He was a lover of Jesus, a praiser, a worshipper and believed the best of all as he prayed for others and shared the Word of God.His favorite Scriptures were II Cor 5:17; Rom 8:1-2; Phil 2:15 and Ps 3.He was preceded in death by his father, B. D. Shackelford, Sr.; mother Artie Mae Johnson; younger brother C. D. Shackelford, and step-father Emmitt Johnson.His legacy includes his wife of 40 years, Sherryl; sons B. D. III, and William Isaac; daughters Marjorie and Michelle; grandsons Xavier, Andrew Michael, William, Jr.; grand daughter Dymond; brothers John Johnson and Joe (Ruby) Johnson: aunts Ruth Nathan, Tressie Ratliff, Yvonne Asberry; brothers and sisters-in law Ray & Vanessa McDonald, Geneva McDonald, Daryl & Jacqueline Irvin, Larry McDonald; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces.Services will be held Friday, October 22, 2010 at CrossPointe Church, 2601 S.E. 24th & Hwy 9 East at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held at the same location on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 7 p.m.A memorial fund has been established at IBC banks under Tabernacle of David; Booker Shackelford Memorial Fund.

I ran across this website while doing a search on my name and happened to see an old picture of my father was curious to know when it was took.

I want to commend you on your web site Class of 1965.  What a great idea.  It would be a great thing if the MTHS classes took your example and developed web sites.   Great job guys.

This is really neat.  If someone from Class of \'65 want to donate a web site to the Class of \'62.  We would love it.  I don\'t think we have the talent amongst us.

Also, I really appreciate how you guys stay in touch with each other.  I think you set a standard for the rest of us to follow.
